Earlier today, Xiaomi officially announced the Redmi Note 3, the next-generation of the company's affordable phablet line. The announcements comes less than a year and only a few months since the company released the Redmi Note 2 back in August. Some speculate that the Redmi Note 3 was originally supposed to be called the Note 2 Pro but the company decided to just call it the Note 3.
With the Redmi Note 3, Xiaomi has decided to change its packaging from the simple and plain brown box to a smooth white box with a picture of the Redmi Note 3 on the front of the box and its name printed on the front and sides of the box. The new packaging reminds us somewhat of Apple's packaging for its iPhone 6 and 6S.
The company has also changed many other things with the Note 3 which makes the decision to change the name from the Note 2 Pro to the Note 3 make sense. First off, the Note 3 now features a full metal body that will be available in either gray, gold, or silver. It's the first time Xiaomi has decided to use a metal body for any of its Redmi series devices.
The metal body of the Note 3 is noticeably different from its predecessor. Other than keeping the same width at 76mm, the Note 3 is now slightly thicker at 8.65mm from 8.3mm and shorter at 152mm from 150mm. The edges of the back side of the Note 3 is also more curved than the Note 2 making it easier and more comfortable to grip.
The Redmi Note 3 also features a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor placed below the device's camera and dual LED flash, which is also a first for the company's Redmi series. According to Xiaomi, the Redmi Note 3's fingerprint sensor only takes 0.3 seconds to scan and identify a user's fingerprint.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 will be available in two variants with different processors, storage, RAM, and graphics chips. The cheaper Standard variant, priced at 899 Yuan, will feature a 2GHz MT6795 processor, a PowerVR G6200 550MHz graphics chip, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. The other, higher-end variant will come with a higher-clocked 2.2GHz MT6795T processor, a PowerVR G6200 700MHz GPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a price tag of 1099 Yuan.
